On March 14, at the Hanover Marriott in Whippany, NJ, the New Jersey Packaging Executives Club (NJPEC) welcomed members and guests to a new event entitled “Innovation 2013: Building the Future.” The evening was packed with innovative ideas and practicalities, from product display tables from industry suppliers to a stimulating lecture by an international business professional. A number of exhibitors presented some of their most creative components and techniques during the cocktail hour, allowing attendees to network and ask questions concerning the evolution and industrialization of the products shown. Following a buffet dinner, special guest of the evening, Chris Allen, CEO of Biomimicry 3.8, outlined a unique approach to innovation as it relates to natural progression and evolution. (Biomimicry 3.8 relates to the 3.8 billion years the Earth has been in existence and the relatively short time that mankind has existed in that timeframe.) Allen explained how designs used in nature, pre-man, can be adapted to current needs.
